Ask for an informational interview – Not a Job

Don’t ask for a job right off the bat; make the first request an informational interview to someone you want to contact. Let them get to know you first. (and include a signature in your email)

Hi <person i want to connect with>,

I was wondering if you would have 10 or 15 minutes to talk more about ways that I might contribute to <THEIR company>? I’m currently a <your title> at <my current company> and a <year> METALS alum as well as <optional important accomplishment/role>. As a <relevant, mutual interest>, I’m excited by what <THEIR company> is doing and I would love to be involved. Given my education, as well as my experiences in <relevant experiences — for example product management, entrepreneurship and/or course development>, I believe that I am able to make significant contributions to helping <THEIR company> achieve its mission.

<Our mutual contact> (cc’ed) recommended that I contact you; he thought <THEIR company> might be where I could make an impactful difference. I am attaching my resume for your review.

I look forward to talking with you. Thank you for your time.
